A Ride with Ben Serotta...

Today my usual Saturday morning Richmond Park Club ride had a nice twist with the introduction and thereafter ride with the American guru frame builder Ben Serotta. http://www.serotta.com/

This past week he was in town promoting their new catalogue of bikes and obviously it seemed a perfect opportunity for the club's major sponsor Cyclefit http://www.cyclefit.co.uk/ to promote his machines with a few laps around the park.

For me it was a nice warm down lap after my 50km pack ride but more importantly a good opportunity for a mate of mine Geoff to chat with Ben after he introduced these two companies six years ago.

Today Cyclefit are the UK & Europe dealers of Serotta bikes but unfortunately for me my Trek stood out like a sore thumb, but then I don't think he really cared...

Madrid & Segovia..

Having quite a few days of leave to take from work and desperate for a holiday I decided to visit my parents in Madrid for a week, while Blair stayed in London.

The weather was glorious and the food was, as always, fantastic (especially the one my mum made!). It was very nice spending a bit of time with my parents and catching up with some good friends I have in Madrid.

Apart from the usual shopping and eating expeditions my parents and I decided to take a day trip to Segovia, a beautiful Castillan city 54 miles away from Madrid.

A bit like Toledo (see blog http://blairjgray.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html) but on a smaller scale, it is full of small alleys and beautiful buildings. Indeed, UNESCO declared “Heritage of Mankind” in 1985.

Segovia was a city of great importance during Roman times and the ancient Roman Aqueduct, the largest and best preserved of its

kind anywhere, still spans the old market square, Plaza del Azoguejo. It has 118 arches, was constructed out of granite and reaches a height of 29 meters. The Aqueduct now forms part of the old fortification walls surrounding the historical town centre of Segovia.

On the north-west extreme of the wall is the famous Alcázar castle (http://www.alcazardesegovia.com/), apparently the source of

inspiration to Walt Disney, and where Queen Isabel promised Columbus the financial backing he needed to discover America. The castle dates from the 12th century, but a large segment, which contained its Moorish ceilings, was destroyed by fire in 1862.

The tallest building in Segovia is still the 16th-century Cathedral, a prominent landmark as one approaches from any direction. Constructed between 1515 and 1558, this is the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain.

60th Suprise!

This weekend Grigoria, Maria and I flew to Madrid to celebrate their Dad's 60th Birthday.

For months now they have been plotting to surprise him and despite a couple of close shaves they managed to keep the secret! Needless to say, their father could not believe his eyes when he opened the door with us sitting on the floor in front of him!

On Friday night for the birthday dinner we had reserved a table at El Buey (http://www.restauranteelbuey.com/), a traditional Spanish restaurant where you order a dish of cut meat and cook it yourself on specially heated plates. As always there was too much food and the mood was decidedly merry by the time we got home!

Saturday was dedicated to shopping. Maria, Grigoria and their Mum made tireless efforts to support the Spanish economy whereas their dad & I spent the day commenting on how nice they looked in their new clothes and trying to look awake!
Sunday morning was a lot less hectic. Having packed our things ready for the airport we headed to the heart of Madrid for some 'Churros' and hot chocolate!

The weather throughout the weekend has been glorious which made our return to rainy London even harder!
